Fame: The Musical

The Lyric Theatre, QPAC in Brisbane

“Fame! People will see me and cry”

Various stereotypes of teenagers attend an arts academy.

Another musical for people who know nothing about musicals. This is characters and a storyline thrown together to showcase a popular form of street dancing. Cue the laser lighting. Some actual talent does get through but only occasionally is the dance-up worth any of the dire script. We all know the ‘I’m rich and you’re poor but let’s dance together’ bit. Other clichés include ‘A drummer… who’s a girl?’ and ‘He may not be book smart but he’s just so gosh darn talented’. There is no attempt to be original or add any depth to these characters.  And while we are on the subject of things that have been done: the song ‘Fame.’ It’s been playing on the radio for years, no need to play it more than once in the show. Everything said this could in no way be worse than the latest Fame movie.
